I am 47 years old, and since I was a young teenager I've always felt self-conscious about my nose. Although it was not exceptionally large, it had a bump on the bridge of the nose. I have 4 brothers and I felt it very unfair that their noses were smaller and straighter than mine. I also wished I had taken after my mother as her nose is fairly small and dainty.
While growing up, my complex never went away and I always felt that people were looking at my nose and not at me. If I spoke with people my eyes would be directed at their nose and not at their eyes. If I were walking about, I would constantly be looking at everybody's noses. It affected me so much that it stopped me from taking part in our local Miss Gibraltar show. That's how self-conscious I was!
Being terrified of going through the operation, and not wishing to upset my mother's feelings, as she was opposed to people changing their appearance and wishing to respect her wishes, I never took the plunge. But last year a friend of mine had a rhinoplasty and he said that it was the best thing he had done as he also hated his nose. That was the defining moment that made me decide that it was time to think of me and not anyone else. I am very lucky that I have a very supportive husband, and he said that if that was what I wanted, then he would support me all the way.
I started to look around for a surgeon who I would feel comfortable with and make me feel confident in his expertise. After having spoken with a friend of mine who had had a breast augmentation with Dr Vricella, I started researching him and his facilities, and found that being English-speaking was a big plus in the decision-making.
That was when I first spoke with Louise, his Head Patient Coordinator, and what a lovely person she is. She answered all my questions and made me feel as if I was someone very special. She was always a phone call away for any queries or worries I had, which certainly helps the patient leading up to the big day.
When I first met Dr Vricella, I was pleasantly surprised to see that his calm demeanour, his clear and informative explanation of the whole procedure and answering all my questions, immediately convinced me that I had found the right surgeon for me.
During my pre-op I met Damien Moore, his Clinical Services Director and Specialist Nurse, and immediately I felt that he would be a great asset for me with his jovial disposition. He made me feel at ease and reassured me constantly that I would be fine. So together with Louise and Damien I was really looking forward to the procedure, especially as Damien would be there with me holding my hand till I fell asleep. What a pleasure to have such VIP treatment from 2 lovely people!
I can honestly say that it has been the best decision I have ever made. Dr Vricella has an exceptional team behind him and every single member of his team deserve my deepest gratitude for their care and singular attention I was given throughout my stay in the hospital. All my needs were met with professionalism and sensitivity. And you can even almost believe you are in a 5 star hotel as the hospital is situated in a lovely building with a large veranda facing a wonderful garden and outdoor pool.
I am not going to go into how I felt after the operation because as everybody knows you are a bit sore, bruised and swollen. What I am going to say is that if you are thinking of having cosmetic surgery, go for a consultation with Dr Vricella. You will not go wrong in choosing him. I can definitely recommend him to anyone and I am so happy with my new nose. He has returned my confidence and for that I will always be grateful to him.
